Name of the project: Low mountains - Dar al-Ma'mûn invites Marc-Olivier Wahler
Date<: Exhibition from Thursday 1st March 2012 to April 15, 2012 -
Opening Thursday 1st March from 7pm to 9pm
Location: Dar Bellarj
To mark the occasion of the Marrakech Biennale, Dar al-Ma'mûn is pleased to invite Marc-Olivier Wahler, Director of the Palais de Tokyo - National contemporary art center in Paris, France. The Palais de Tokyo is an art center created in the early 2000s, which rapidly established itself on the international scene. Since 2006, under the leadership of its director, Marc-Olivier Wahler, previously director of the New York Swiss Institute, its dynamic has continued to increase through major exhibitions ("Mille milliards d'années," personal exhibitions of Ugo Rondinone and Jeremy Deller, or work of recognition from artists such as Charlotte Posenenske, not to mention the permanent work to support emerging scenes with space dedicated "modules"). In addition, Marc-Olivier Wahler has developed an « outdoor » program called "Chalets de Tokyo" to multiple collaborations around the world.
The exhibition "Low mountains" brings together works by Tony Matelli, Gianni Motti, Michel Blazy, Bertrand Dezoteux, Alex Israel, Vincent Ganivet, Katinka Bock , Philippe Mayaux and is significant of the program set up by Marc-Olvier Wahler over the past 6 years: the artists presented have all collaborated with the Parisian institution. The change of context, in Dar Bellarj, outside the normative references of the art center, seeks otherness beyond the walls: the exhibition will benefit from a specific public support, including a proposal for further activities for the public, adults and children of Dar Bellarj, making the exhibition fully accessible to all.
On the occasion of the Marrakech Biennale, "Low mountains" makes a modest but energetic contribution to what creation can mean.
Finally, "Low mountains" is the first exhibition of a series to come to Dar al Ma'mûn: by proposing « Carte Blanche » exhibitions here in Marrakech to major international art centers, current international creation thereby becomes accessible to Morocco.
Supported by the Dar Bellarj foundation and the Palais de Tokyo.

"The Golden Fairy Tale or the Paradox of Natural Resources"
29th, February until 6th, March 2012

Golden fairy tales or the the paradox of natural resources
The transcultural and free association of artists T.act develops a site specific installation based on artistic research about the natural resource "gold". Ever since historical and recent policies are enormously influenced by the disposability of natural resources. Aspects of post- colonialism, globalised economic strategies and with it evident local consequences give witness about this fact.
Furthermore the material "gold" has a broad range of connotations. So "The Beyond" which can be found in fairy tales and regional traditions is opening the topic to tangible local and personal backgrounds.
The interest of T.act is to develop an artwork which is working with a specific material and as well with its relations between global and local structures in the sense of cultural studies .
T.act intends to investigate questions of collaboration as well as conception and recognition of art in the various "worlds". We wonder, whether human ways of dealing with the global and cross-border problems of 21st century can be proved and visualized by an artistic process in the sense of a transforming term of a hybrid culture.
A working process based on democratic principles will substantiate the exhibition's display in Marakesh in March 2012.

On Geometry and Speculation
Date :29th of February - 28th of March 2012
Opening : Friday 2nd March, 4:30-7:00pm
Location: ESAV (Ecole Supérieure des Arts Visuels de Marrakech)

The exhibition On Geometry and Speculation takes the context of the city of Marrakech to investigate issues revolving around interdisciplinary representation in Islamic and Western art. The starting point is Islamic thought and the prohibition of depicting the world by imaging. This led to a representation of the world by mathematical form. The viewer will be directed to new ways of viewing Geometry, both historically as politically. The works presented by contemporary artists working with a divers set of media and materials will also be connected to the idea of education as a notion of promise and the status of affairs in Morocco after the Arab Spring. Through the physical act, the use of rhythm, algorithm and translation in sound and images the artists show different approaches to these issues.
With the artists: Martijn van Boven (NL) and Tom Tlalim (IS/UK), Julia Dault (US), Marjolijn Dijkman (NL), Germaine Dulac (FR), Aurélien Froment (FR), Berit Greinke (UK) and Alessandro Altavilla (UK), Navid Nuur (NL), Lisa Oppenheim (US), Amalia Pica (UK/AR), Esther Polak (NL) and Ivar van Bekkum (NL), Mike Rijnierse (NL), Bram Vreven (NL).

« Regard sur corps de femme », exhibition of Meriem Bouderbala
Opening : February 29th at 6 :30pm
Location : Hotel Hivernage, My Sky, Hivernage
The artwork represented by Meriem Bouderbala in this exhibition are a legacy and symbolism of traditional Arabic poetry. Mahmoud Darwish's poetry sneak into draped in white silhouettes without revealing flesh. Is there a story of codified bans on representation of the body or does he read between the lines of poetry or arabesques?
In the work of Meriam Bouderbala, the body is omnipresent. In some cases, it recalls images of women between the dead and the living, as generated by the vacuum, "my background is an attempt to escape an alternative that I refuse. I find this spot where the human figure is both flesh and sign. "
The artist translates his "look at woman's body" by two sets, the first is that of the Bedouin, which evoke the intimacy of the body while transgressing norms and the various aesthetic conformity. Here the body and cloth intertwine and reveal a variety of topics such as critical questioning of Orientalism and particularly fantasies projected on the Eastern woman and her condition in the Arab world.
Through the second series, entitled "Female palimpsest" Bouderbala removed the body, leaving only the evanescent silhouettes with flowing contours. The artist accentuates the image of women to fragmented by ghost of a poem by Mahmoud Darwish entitled'' In this land, in the shadow of words''. The desired appearance is like a game of shimmering fragmented our identities.
Meriam Bouderbala used the veil to hide the flesh. The woman's body slips away and turns into a "sacred thing". The veil is a barrier between us and others, revealing that creates a link between the inside - or outside or hidden and the visible: a process influenced by Sufi philosophy.

In her installation "La Chrysalide," Faten Safieddine, the Lebanese-Moroccan videographer and photographer, creates a world of optical illusions that confuses our sensory perceptions with our own projections and enables us to pass through the veils of Knowledge from the world of Light to the Shadows and vice versa.
The installation shows a short film, co-directed by Faten Safieddine and the Moroccan director-photographer Othman Zine, which illustrates in a dreamlike style the struggle of women to extricate themselves from the shackles of cultural conditionings and achieve freedom and fullness.

All the others in me,
Performance by Maria José Arjona : Friday 2nd March, 7:30-8:30
Location : Dar Cherifa
Curated by Eugenio Viola
In the work of Maria Jose Arjona, the body still has a central place, it is a powerful visual communications, energy exchange but also a generator of meaning. It is as well a committed practice that the Colombian artist shows us, ready to transgress the limits imposed by society and individuals caused by violence and fear, still present in contemporary society.
All The Others in me is a performance that offers one of the most syncretic visions among the many stereotypes of the female body and its perception in Western society and non Western ones.
